Join Metro Art Presents on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for a free screening of The Last Repair Shop (2023), including a live musical performance and conversation led by Camille Delaney-McNeil, director of the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) Center. Experience the Academy Award-winning documentary short about the craftspeople who keep our city’s music alive.
Cities across the United States used to provide free and freely repaired musical instruments to public schoolchildren. Los Angeles, which has been providing the service since 1959, is one of the last cities to do so.
From Academy Award-winning directing duo Kris Bowers and Ben Proudfoot, The Last Repair Shop takes you into the nondescript downtown warehouse where a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople keep over 80,000 student instruments in good repair.
Witness the profound life stories of both the craftspeople and students whose lives have been transformed by their instruments –– using music to heal from loss and heartbreak as they build new relationships.
RSVP recommended, but not required. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The first 40 visitors to present their TAP cards to the #MetroArtLA info table will receive a free copy of our Los Angeles Through the Eyes of Artists publication.
