Mariana Castillo Deball, one of three artists commissioned by Metro Art to create new work for the future Wilshire/La Cienega Station on the D Line Extension, will be holding a special workshop at Dino Fest 2024 on September 21. This annual all-day event, which takes place at the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park, celebrates dinosaurs, their prehistoric past, and the science that brings their world to life.
Castillo Deball’s project was inspired by the numerous fossils unearthed as our construction teams tunneled beneath Wilshire Boulevard. Drawing from a technique archeologists use to record fossil findings without removing them from their settings, Castillo Deball created fossil rubbings of select samples from the excavation site and incorporated imagery inspired by the rubbings into her artwork design.
These fossil rubbings connect us to our prehistoric past, reminding us of the diverse wildlife that once roamed this bustling metropolitan area and the interconnected stories of our environment.
At Dino Fest, Castillo Deball will lead fossil workshops from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. She will be joined by paleontologist Eric Scott. You’ll be able to learn more about her practice, see some of the fossils that were excavated onsite, and create your very own fossil rubbing to take home. Join us!

About the Artist
Mariana Castillo Deball takes a kaleidoscopic approach to her practice, mediating between science, archaeology, and the visual arts and exploring the way in which these disciplines describe the world. Her installations, performances, sculptures, and editorial projects arise from the recombination of different languages to understand the role objects play in our identities and histories. By initiating dialogue and exchange with institutions and museums beyond contemporary art, she collaborates with ethnographic collections, libraries, and historical archives.
