Go Metro to the Kingdom Day Parade on Monday, Feb. 17!

After being postponed due to the wildfires last month, the 40th annual Kingdom Day Parade honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has been rescheduled to this Monday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m.

Going Metro to the parade is easy and convenient with two Metro K Line train stations just steps from the parade route.

The Kingdom Day Parade is widely considered to be the nation’s largest — and best — celebration of Dr. King and the civil rights movement that he helped lead. The parade includes floats, marching bands, musical performances and community groups. This year’s theme is “Peace and Unity, Let it Start with Us.”

Here’s how to get to the parade on Metro:

•Two K Line stations are along the parade route: the aptly-named Martin Luther King, Jr. Station at Crenshaw Boulevard and MLK Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Station at Crenshaw and Vernon.

•The K Line is easily reached via the E Line’s Expo/Crenshaw Station. From the station, cross Exposition Boulevard to the K Line’s underground Expo/Crenshaw Station.

•To plan your transit trip, use Google Maps, Apple Maps, the Transit app, Moovit app or metro.net. The Metro Rail and Busway map is below.

•A regular fare on Metro is $1.75 each way and fare includes two hours of free transfers. Fares can be paid with TAP cards that can be purchased from vending machines at all Metro Rail and Busway stations, or on the TAP app, which you can download from the Apple App store or the Google Play store.

•Pro tip!: children five and under ride free if accompanied by a paying adult.

•There will be detours from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday for Metro Bus Lines 40, 102, 105, 206, 207, 209 and 210 in the area around the parade. Signs will be posted at impacted bus stops and detour info is available on our service advisories page.

Metro is one of the many proud sponsors of the Kingdom Day Parade. Once again, our vintage bus will be in the parade, as well as agency staff and Metro Board Members — Second Vice Chair Jacqueline Dupont-Walker and Supervisor Hilda Solis.

The opening of the K Line in 2022 brought rail service back to the Crenshaw Corridor for the first time since the 1950s. There are more projects in the works that will help us deliver faster and more convenient rides to and from the K Line corridor:

•The LAX/Metro Transit Center is forecast to open later this year, serving the C and K Lines and local buses. The station will be the transfer point to the future LAX people mover serving airport terminals.

•ICYMI: last fall we reconfigured the C and K Lines and opened the new Century/Aviation Station that is a stop on both lines. When the LAX/Metro Transit Center opens, the C Line will run between that station and Norwalk. The K Line will run between Expo/Crenshaw and Redondo Beach with stops at the LAX/Metro Transit Center.

•We’re also planning extensions of the K Line south to Torrance and north to Mid-City, West Hollywood and Hollywood.
