Go Metro Forecast
Southern California’s first Santa Ana wind event of the season is here, and it’s strong. Gusty offshore winds, dangerously low humidity, and well-above-normal temperatures have prompted Heat Advisories and Red Flag Warnings across much of Los Angeles through Saturday. This is a critical fire weather situation—please use extreme caution around any potential ignition sources this weekend.
Friday is the peak of the wind event. Gusts in the strongest areas could reach 50 to 60 mph along mountain canyons and ridgetops. Downsloping winds and clear skies will send temperatures soaring, with coastal and valley areas reaching the upper 80s to 90s and a 10% chance of isolated triple-digit readings. That puts temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees above normal for mid-October.
Winds ease somewhat on Saturday as offshore flow weakens and shifts more easterly, but some advisory-level gusts will linger in the windiest areas. A weak sea breeze returns to cool coastal spots by 2 to 4 degrees, though inland areas will see little change. Highs Saturday remain in the lower to mid-90s for most valley locations. Sunday brings an additional 3 to 5-degree cooling as upper-level support collapses, but temperatures will still finish 4 to 8 degrees above normal.
Good news is on the horizon. A significant cool-down with a chance of widespread rain is expected next week, a welcome development after this stretch of heat.
