El Grito Mexican Independence Celebrations
The weekend is jam-packed with parades, festivals and, of course, grito competitions, to celebrate Mexican Independence. Check out our Source post with details about our top five free El Grito fiestas.
Hola Mexico Film Festival
One of the biggest showcases of Mexican cinema outside of Mexico, the Hola Mexico Film Festival rolls out the red carpet in L.A. September 12, continuing through Sept. 20. Don’t miss this amazing chance to get lost in dramas, comedies, documentaries and kids’ stories brought to the screen by some of Mexico’s most bold and unique storytellers. The weekend’s schedule of movies is mostly screening at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live in downtown L.A.
Go Metro: Take the A or E Line to Pico Station, and it’s about a 10-minute walk to the L.A. Live area.
Friday, September 12
Oktoberfest
Culver City’s Ivy Station jumps into the Oktoberfest festivities this Friday night. Oktoberfest is a German tradition celebrating Bavarian beer, food and culture. The fun and entertainment at Ivy Station will include German-inspired beer and wine, food trucks, Oktoberfest games and contests, live polka music and an artisan mini-market.

UCLA Football
The Bruins will take on the New Mexico Lobos in an attempt to turn around a rough start to the season.

Saturday, September 13
Latino Heritage Celebration
The City of San Fernando is kicking off Latino Heritage Month with a colorful outdoor celebration at city hall. Come for the exciting cultural performances, including the “Grito de Dolores” reenactment, and stay for delicious foods representing the many flavors of Latin America!

Los Angeles Libros Festival
¡Vamos a la biblioteca! Let’s go to the library! The L.A. County Public Library is hosting a bilingual book festival for all ages at the central location in downtown L.A. The fun will include Spanish-language and bilingual storytelling, musical performances, authors, workshops and books for everyone – in Spanish, English and bilingual.

Sunday, September 14
CicLAvia Historic South Central meets Watts
This Sunday, CicLAvia takes over the streets of South L.A. and Watts for some car-free fun. Whether it’s biking, walking, skating, running or rolling, you choose your own way to enjoy the day! Explore neighborhoods along Central Avenue between 109th Street and Washington Boulevard, plus CicLAvia activity hubs will feature music and DJs, cool merch, kids’ games, bike services, community booths and more!
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. FREE
Go Metro: Take the A Line to any station between San Pedro and 103rd Street/Watts Towers – bikes are welcome on board our trains. Biking directly to the event? Roots and Routes
The community celebration, sponsored by Metro and taking place at the Willowbrooks/Rosa Parks Station, will feature live entertainment by Watts’ own Furnace band. Family-friendly art activities will be presented by LA Commons in collaboration with the Music Center and TEC Leimert, a non-profit organization in service of underserved communities. As a special attraction, the vintage Rosa Parks bus will also be on display.
