Heads up! Upcoming utility work on Van Nuys Boulevard for East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project 

Whether you prefer to travel by train, bus, bike, or a combination of all three, we’ve got you covered as we work to provide faster and more reliable transit options for the San Fernando Valley. Central to our plans is the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project, a 6.7-mile street-level rail line connecting Van Nuys, Panorama City, Arleta, and Pacoima. When complete, there will be 11 brand new stations along Van Nuys Boulevard, extending from the G Line Van Nuys Station to Van Nuys Boulevard and San Fernando Road in the north.   

This Friday, April 4, our contractor, San Fernando Transit Constructors, is beginning utility work along Van Nuys Boulevard between Gault and Arminta Streets. This work, expected to last 20-24 months, will require the installation of K-rail barriers (ie. the white, triangular shaped concrete barriers separating traffic lanes from the work area) along northbound Van Nuys Boulevard. These barriers are designed for your safety, as well as that of our work crews. These barriers will cordon off one lane and the shoulder lane in the northbound direction on Van Nuys Boulevard, leaving two lanes open in each direction. They will remain in place until the utility work is complete.  

 Any construction project creates potential impacts to traffic. Here’s what you can expect:  

• Expect traffic delays along Van Nuys Bl during K-rail installation and street reconfiguration work. The installation will begin Friday, April 4, 2025, at 8 p.m. and continue through Monday, April 7, 2025, at 6 a.m.  

• After the weekend, two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction for vehicular traffic with K-rail installed on northbound Van Nuys Bl.

• Work inside the K-rail area will take place in two shifts: daytime from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and nighttime from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.  

• Parking is restricted in posted areas, please follow the signage. 

• Bus service will continue with temporary bus stop relocations as needed, please follow the signage. 

• Sidewalks in this area will remain open for pedestrians. 

• Access to driveways in this area will be maintained unless notified in advance. 

• Certain left turns will be removed during construction along Van Nuys Bl between Gault and Arminta Streets.
