If you drive the I-105 Freeway at night, plan ahead! Metro is beginning construction for the I-105 ExpressLanes Project, which means nighttime lane reductions and full closures starting February 26 and continuing through March 17.
What’s happening?
Metro is converting the existing HOV lanes on the 105 into two ExpressLanes in each direction. The first segment to be built will be Sepulveda Boulevard to Central Avenue. Two other phases will extend the ExpressLanes for a total of 18 miles to Studebaker Road in Norwalk.
These new ExpressLanes will help east-west travel in southern L.A. County and make it easier to reach LAX. It will also be possible to drive directly between the ExpressLanes on the 105 and the 110.
What drivers need to know
Construction crews will be installing temporary roadway striping to prepare for future work. This means up to three lanes will be closed on certain nights, and in some cases, full freeway closures will take place in both directions. If you’re traveling on the 105 overnight, expect delays and follow posted detour signs.
Up to three lanes of westbound I-105 will be closed:
•Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 from Central Avenue to Prairie Avenue.
•Thursday, Feb. 27 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28 from Central Avenue to Prairie Avenue.
Westbound Full Freeway Closures:
Friday, February 28, from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. between Central Av and I-110
- DETOUR: From WB I-105, exit at Central Av off-ramp, north on Central Av, west on Imperial Hwy, south on Vermont Av to the on-ramp to WB I-105
Monday, March 3, from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. between I-110 and Western Av
- DETOUR: From WB I-105, exit at Vermont Av off-ramp, north on Vermont Av, west on Imperial Hwy, south on Crenshaw Bl to the on-ramp to WB I-105
Wednesday, March 5, from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. between Western Av and Crenshaw Bl

•Monday, March 10 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, from Prairie Avenue to Central Avenue

Freeways are a blight on the landscape and should be reduced not adding more lanes. Turning general lanes into tolled express lanes is great long term, we shouldn’t need to compensate and add the general lanes back. The 105 is mostly redundant anyway since we have the C/Green Line and the APM is coming for LAX. Long term plans should start to tear down the freeway and expand train service to reclaim all the gained land with more housing, parks, and job centers.
