Let freedom ring! Go Metro to Juneteenth and Pride celebrations June 19-22

Whenever you hop on a Metro bus or train, there’s a good chance you’ll hear dozens of different languages spoken by people of all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, professions and cultural backgrounds. People dropping their kids off at school. People heading to the beach. People going to the doctor’s office or a dance recital or a Dodgers game. Inside these shared spaces, you are surrounded by stories; sometimes joyful ones having to do with daily triumphs and rites of passage. At other times, stories of hardship, struggle and beating the odds.   

So, it goes without saying that Juneteenth, observed tomorrow, is a special day for us. (Note: All Metro buses and trains will run on regular service Thursday, June 19.) 

Even though Juneteenth became a national holiday only a few years ago, it has been celebrated for a very long time. Its origins date back to 1865, when Union soldiers fighting in the Civil War arrived in Galveston, Texas — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation — to announce that the enslaved people in the state were finally free. This holiday commemorates everything we’ve overcome and everything that’s still possible.  

And don’t miss the Juneteenth Ceremony taking place on Thursday, June 19, at historic Bruce’s Beach Park. The ceremony will include speakers from the community, special guests and poets from the Mira Costa Black Students Union.

Leimert Park Village Juneteenth Celebration 
Also on Thursday, celebrate Juneteenth in Leimert Park Village featuring drum circles, jazz and DJ sets as well as poetry, line dancing, health and wellness resources.

L.A. Dodgers Baseball
The Dodgers are back at home this weekend taking on the Washington Nationals. Come out for the game; and stay for the summer camaraderie.

KCRW Summer Nights at CAAM 
KCRW Summer Nights comes to the California African American Museum Friday night with a family-friendly dance party, featuring tunes by DJ Damar Davis and KCRW DJ Novena Carmel. The night promises to be rich in summer vibes and so much more –– including food trucks, music and dancing, crafts, a beer garden and a chance to enjoy the art in the galleries.

Saturday, June 21

Culver City Juneteenth Celebration 
Culver City’s Ivy Station will host a family-friendly Juneteenth celebration to honor freedom, unity and Black culture. You won’t want to miss a performance of the Black National Anthem! The party will feature soul food from Dulan’s on Crenshaw, activities for kids, live music from Top Shelf Brass Band and BriJolie and Friends, plus a pop-up marketplace.

SaMo Pride 2025 
Every year, SaMo Pride is a vibrant celebration of love and community where everyone is welcome and everyone belongs. The SaMo Pride 2025 festivities will take place all Saturday at various locations, including the Third Street Promenade, the Santa Monica Pier and Santa Monica’s Main Street. Come for beach volleyball and live music, and stay for Drag Bingo and disco dancing all night.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Soccer 
As excitement begins to build for the 2026 World Cup, the Club World Cup 2025 is in full swing now. Eleven North American cities, including L.A., are hosting top-ranking club teams from around the world as they compete for the global championship. This Saturday’s match at the Rose Bowl will give fans a showdown between River Plate of Argentina and Monterrey, hailing from Mexico. 
Go Metro: Take the A Line to Memorial Park Station. From the station, turn right (west) on Holly Street, walk past Fair Oaks Avenue and the shuttles will be on the far side of the Parsons parking lot – before North Pasadena Avenue. The shuttle returns to the Metro station from Rose Bowl lot B. Tips for your match day trip.

Yoga and Beach Clean-up 
This isn’t your average beach day, hosted by It’s Bigger Than Us and WalkGoodLA! This beach day will be a great opportunity to meet up for some beginner-friendly yoga before taking care of our beaches. Bring your own yoga mat.

Take Line 108 to Washington/Pacific and it’s a short walk on Washington toward the ocean 

Juneteenth Celebration and Concert at Polliwog Park 
On Sunday, a family-friendly Juneteenth Celebration & Concert will take place at Polliwog Park, featuring Black-owned business vendors, food trucks, live music and special performances. 
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. FREE 
Go Metro: Take Metro bus Line 232 to Sepulveda/Manhattan Beach
