Gear up and #GoMetro during Bike Month this May 

It’s that time of year again … Bike Month is kicking off! You’re in for a month-long celebration of this fast, clean, efficient, healthy, and highly enjoyable option for getting around town. We’ve got some exciting deals and promotions (with prizes!) happening this month. Keep reading to learn more! 

A few facts about our existing bike programs:  

Explore LA County’s bike paths, with more on the way!   

Did you know that Metro provides grants to LA County cities to help them build bike lanes on city streets? As of today, there are 1,935 miles of bike lanes on LA County streets.  These include off-street bike paths (321 mi), unprotected bike lanes (984 mi), on-street bicycle routes (553 mi, also known as ‘sharrows’) as well as separated bicycle lanes/cycle track (77 mi).  

And we’re building more! On May 17, we will open the highly anticipated Rail-to-Rail Project, 5.5 miles of biking and walking paths in South LA that bring the Fairview Heights Station on the K Line and the Slauson Station on the A Line closer together. The route starts in Inglewood and passes through the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Hyde Park, Chesterfield Square, Harvard Park, Vermont-Slauson, South Park, and Central Alameda, as well as unincorporated Florence-Graham. You’re invited to the festivities –– details to come.  

Later on, we’ll open the LA River Path Project, an approximately 8-mile bicycle and pedestrian path along the LA River. This path will be the missing link in the existing river path between Elysian Valley and the City of Maywood, passing DTLA and the City of Vernon along the way. This summer, we’ll be hosting community meetings about the project. Stay tuned for details and dates!  

Try out Metro Bike Share with some cool promotions!  

In 2016, we launched Metro Bike Share in Downtown Los Angeles, a 24/7 bike rental service designed for taking short trips and connecting to transit. Today, this program, a partnership between Metro and the City of Los Angeles, has grown to 225 stations throughout Central Los Angeles, the Westside, and North Hollywood. We currently have 1800 bikes in our fleet. Last year, 519,000 rides were taken with Bike Share.  

Haven’t tried it yet? There’s no better time than now! Throughout the entire month of May, Metro Bike Share is offering a Bike Share 30-Day Pass for just $1. Sign up online using the Metro Bike Share mobile app or taptogo.net/metrobikeshare, and use promo code BIKEMONTH25.   

During Bike Week –– Monday, May 12 through Friday, May 16 –– Metro Bike Share will host a flash sale offering ½ off the 365-Day Pass with promo code  BIKEANYWHERE25, valid for new users and users who do not already have an active 365-Day Pass.

Friendly Reminder! Always properly return your Metro Bike to end your trip and never leave it unattended – riders will be charged penalty fees up to $2,500 for bikes that are missing or improperly docked.   

More BikeLink bike locker locations!  

Need a secure, easy place to park your bike while you ride Metro? You came to the right place! Last year, we introduced a new, keyless, on-demand electronic bike locker rental system that allows you to rent lockers on a first come, first served basis. We originally launched at 9 stations: Highland Park, Monrovia, Wardlow, Universal City, Redondo Beach, Wilshire/Western, Culver City, Canoga, and 37th/USC.  

Now, based on the program’s success, we’ve launched these new lockers at 18 additional stations:

Find a nearby locker and access one digitally by registering at www.bikelink.org. Rentals cost $0.75 for the first 12 hours. This May, we’re offering a special promotion. Load $5 onto your BikeLink account, park at one of the new lockers listed above and we will match your $5 –– giving you free parking credits!  

Changes to our Bike Hubs 

Have you used one of our Bike Hubs in the past; that is, the membership-based service stations with lockers, restrooms, and water bottle refill stations? Starting this May, we’re making them free to access and will integrate them into our new BikeLink program. 

But that’s not all! We also have some cool bicycle-friendly events this month.  

Monday, May 12 – Friday, May 16 is Bike Week, celebrated in cities across the country. The goal is to showcase the many benefits of bicycling, and to encourage others to give it a try. Grab some friends, hit the road, and mix up your routine.   

Thursday, May 15 is Bike Day, with FREE RIDES on trains, buses, bikes, and Metro Micro). At Metro, we are all about combining multiple transportation modes to get away. To make that easy, we’ve outfitted all our Metro buses with front-loading bike racks. You are also welcome to bring bikes on board our trains. It’s a great way to experience the city from a new point of view. Here’s a great first-hand account.  

The details:  

• All train turnstiles will be unlocked, and bus operators won’t be collecting fares. No tapping required!   

• Metro Bike Share will offer free 30-minute rides. Redeem at any Metro Bike Share kiosk, online or in the Metro Bike Share app, and enter promo code 051525. This code can be redeemed multiple times throughout the day. A credit or debit card is required. Rides longer than 30 minutes are $1.75 for each additional half hour. Electric Bike Share fees are also waived. Temporary credit card holds may apply.   

• Metro Micro riders can redeem free rides by using the Metro Micro app or browser. No promo code needed!
