UPDATE 12/08: Registration is full. If you signed up, look in your email for a message from Brentwood Art Center.

On Thursday, December 8, from noon to 1 p.m. PST, join Metro Art commissioned artist Sandow Birk for an online conversation to learn about his creative approaches to making public artwork for the Purple (D Line) Extension’s future Westwood/VA Hospital Station. The talk is part of an online conversation series hosted by the Brentwood Art Center and is led by independent curator Meg Linton.

Detail of Sandow Birk’s preliminary sketch for the future Metro Westwood/VA Hospital Station.

Sandow Birk’s artwork concept for the concourse of the station is centered on the West Los Angeles VA Medical Campus and the greater Westwood area.

The artwork design will feature landmarks in the Westwood area accompanied by dinosaurs, vintage buses and other images. The many layers of the neighborhood’s history are a mash-up of time periods in one single portrait of Westwood.

Birk is actively engaging the local community in the artwork’s process! On a rainy morning in October, Birk led a group on a three-hour urban sketching workshop through the streets of Westwood. The workshop was organized by the Brentwood Art Center in collaboration with Metro Art and visited some landmarks that may be featured in the artwork. Participants drew what they saw, then shared their sketches and spoke about the significance of the sights they chose to draw.

In the upcoming talk on December 8, Birk will discuss and share more about this upcoming Metro station artwork.
