Metro extends its condolences to the victims in today’s subway shooting in New York City. “On behalf of the Metro Board of Directors, I would like to extend my deepest condolences for the victims of the tragedy that occurred today in Brooklyn,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor and Metro Board Chair Hilda L. Solis. “Our transit systems must be places where riders can feel secure, and Metro will work to ensure that all Angelenos can move through the system safely.”
There have been no credible threats to the Metro system in Los Angeles County and Metro is operating normal service. Metro, however, is on heightened alert and is working with its security partners at the local, state and national levels to monitor threat levels and share information. Safety is Metro’s top priority. As a precaution, Metro will be deploying additional security personnel at transit stations in Los Angeles County.
“We take the security of our transit customers and employees extremely seriously and we are on constant lookout for all types of security threats,” said Metro CEO Stephanie N. Wiggins. “Safety is everyone’s job and our number one priority. We again urge everyone to be aware of their surroundings and be vigilant on our system and in any public space.”
Metro urges transit riders to help ensure system safety by reporting any suspicious activities on the Metro System by calling 888.950.SAFE (7233), texting 213.788.2777 or by using the Transit Watch app that available on both Android and iPhone platforms. If you see something, say something. Working together in heightened awareness and vigilance, we can all lend our eyes and ears to help ensure safety and security on our transit system.

So this is what it took Metro? A terrorist attack is what it took for yo. . . oh wait, nope, almost positive law enforcement finally enforced their authority regardless of what Metro thought and, at least for the time being, will actually have security throughout the system.
“Safety is everyone’s job and our number one priority.” – This statement actually made me laugh. No it isn’t Ms. Wiggins, no it isn’t. Actions speak louder than words.
This country needs a lot fewer guns and a lot more public transportation.
I’m from NY and only been in LA for 8 years. Sadly, not surprised this happened as subway crime has escalated tremendously. Never encountered that situation growing up. Used the subway system at all hours. Read the cameras on station platform were not working. And one or more cops on the scene could not use their phone. This is a wake up call to the Mayor and Police Commissioner. The next time something like this occurs it could be far/far worse.
Was the NYC bomber homeless? Did the cops prevent the mass shooting? Someone should let LA City Council & LASD know that if they ever rode Metro, there’s quite a difference between “all types of security threats” Ms Wiggins is referring to here.
The last thing we need is for someone like Joe Buscaino or one of the LASD gangs to use this as a political game to push their police-state agenda.
