A peek at the new station mosaic with community and students at Crenshaw High School
As we wind up the year and look forward to 2022, here’s a quick look back at a Metro Art event in the community this past fall related to artwork for the Crenshaw/LAX Line.
Artist Mickalene Thomas shared a preview of her newly-installed Leimert Park Station artwork with high school students and community members at a panel discussion at Crenshaw High School.
The discussion was part of the Gucci Changemakers 3.0 Summit, featuring arts and fashion industry leaders who emphasized the power of creative expression to connect people.
The hand-cut glass mosaic mural by Thomas spans 68 feet on the concourse level wall of the station. The artist integrated many of the natural and architectural hallmarks of Leimert Park Village into the mural, which was originally created as a photo collage and later transformed by skilled artisans into a unique and durable glass material specifically for the project.
Recognizable landmarks in the mural include the Leimert Park fountain, the Vision Theatre, Japanese-influenced home garden designs and a silhouette of the iconic Theme Building at LAX. The mural showcases familiar everyday streetscapes and building facades in the Village.
