Sonder, an artwork featuring community portraits by Metro commissioned artist Kenturah Davis, was recently installed at Downtown Inglewood Station, currently under construction.
Fabricated of porcelain enamel steel panels, the artwork depicts portraits of community members photographed during public gatherings hosted by the artist at her Inglewood art studio and in Leimert Park during the artwork development process.
The photographs were hand painted with stamps incorporating letters that form the words defining the term “sonder.”
Davis was drawn to the term which alludes to the realization that every person has a unique and significant story. She hopes that the portraits inspire connections between strangers, even if only for a passing moment while waiting for the train.
Here are a few photos of the work as it looks in July 2021 installed at the future station!
