Update on cell service in the subway

Our last update on this topic was about six months ago, and thus it’s time for an update:

•Purple Line from Union Station to Wilshire/Western – Cell service is now available on the entire Purple Line for all four major carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon.

•Red Line from Union Station to Vermont/Sunset — Cell service is available for all four carriers.

•Red Line from Hollywood/Western to Hollywood/Vine — Verizon and Sprint are available and AT&T is coming soon.

•Red Line from Hollywood/Highland to North Hollywood — Verizon, Sprint and AT&T will be completing equipment installation in this segment by early 2019. T-Mobile has not yet signed up to provide service through Hollywood segment.

Though cell service is now available along most of the subway, we still ask that in the event of an emergency riders first consider contacting the train operator via the emergency intercom before calling 9-1-1. Riders can also use the text feature on the Transit Watch app to report issues directly to law enforcement.

  1. i’m an AT&T subscriber and I have been able to use service in the subway up to Hollywood/Vine for a few weeks now.

  2. From Vermont/Sunset north, will cell service for T Mobile be available at the same time as the other carriers? It wasn’t listed above,

    • Hi Allison,

It will not at this time, T-Mobile has not signed a contract to provide service yet. We’ll update as soon as anything changes.

      Thanks!

  3. I think T-Mobile customers would like to know why they aren’t on the list of equipping the rest of the stations on the red line. Service doesn’t even reach the Hollywood segment. I appreciate service on the rest of the subway but I think we deserve an update on what they’re doing or why they aren’t doing anything

    • Hi Richard,

T-Mobile has not signed a contract to provide service for the remaining segment yet.

Only cell phone equipment is being installed at this time.

    • Hi,

Metro does not have a vendor lined up to provide WiFi in the tunnels at this time.

      Thank you,

  4. Its pretty annoying actually. I had to ride a good distance while someone was watching some religious argument on youtube on the Red Line.

Another time, I had a ride to Union to catch the 6:05 Surfliner, and a homeless woman was watching a really bad comedian with her bluetooth speaker on the subway.

I wish this would not happen.

  5. The segment between Vermont/Sunset & Hollywood/Vine still has no Verizon Wireless signal, only recently has AT&T & T-Mobile has been available and for a year Sprint.

  6. This is good news for 911 calling. I was surprised that when I tried to contact 950-SAFE number after witnessing a crime on the Expo Line that I had to call several times before it was answered. Now I call 911 for anything urgent.
