17 full weekend closures begin Sept. 8 for Wilshire/La Cienega station construction: what you need to know

Until now, most of the construction activities for the future Purple Line Extension station at Wilshire and La Cienega boulevards have been either behind K-rail or within the La Cienega staging yard.

Now major construction activities are set to begin and 17 full weekend closures are needed to complete three phases of construction. Under Phase 1, pile installation will require a closure of Wilshire Boulevard between La Cienega Boulevard and San Vicente Boulevard during the weekends of September 8 and September 15.

Starting the first weekend of October, the remainder of the weekend closures are required for decking of the street. After decking is completed, traffic can continue to use Wilshire Boulevard while excavation of the station continues below.

What to expect:

  • Full closure for construction will begin at 8 p.m. on Fridays and continue through Mondays at 6 a.m.
  • Work will occur 24/7 during the closures.
  • Building access in the construction areas will be maintained but some sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours are anticipated.
  • There will be detours for traffic and Metro buses during the 17 full weekend closures. For any additional info needed on bus detours call 323.GOMETRO (323-466-3876). The bus detours will follow the street detours — look for signage about stop locations. There will be stops on the detours very close to Wilshire.

Check out the closures and detours below:

Phase 1: Eastbound/Westbound Detour (Wilshire Boulevard, between San Vicente Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard)

Phase 2: Eastbound/Westbound Detour (Wilshire Boulevard/La Cienega Boulevard Intersection)

Phase 2: Northbound/Southbound Detour (Wilshire Boulevard/La Cienega Boulevard Intersection)

Phase 3 Eastbound/Westbound Detour (Wilshire Boulevard, between San Vicente Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard)

The Purple Line Extension will extend the subway from its current terminus at Wilshire/Western for 9 miles to Westwood. The project is being constructed in three sections. The first, which is under construction, is 3.9 miles from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega with new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. The first section is projected to open in late 2023.
