Metro’s contractor Hensel Phelps/Herzog JV (HPH) continues moving forward with construction of the Southwestern Yard, the future Metro Division 16 rail yard maintenance facility for the Crenshaw/LAX Line. The facility is located near the Los Angeles International Airport.

Construction crews are installing steel structures for the main shop building and material storage building. Work is also being done to prepare the foundation and underground utilities for the train-wash and cleaning platform. The second phase of the project demolition, excavation, and grading is underway. This includes excavation for the paint and body shop building structure. HPH is also working with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) in the construction of the three piles and columns that will support the future LAX Automated People Mover project.

The 115,650 square foot facility will have capacity to store up to 70 light rail vehicles. Construction began in May 2016 and is expected to be complete by November 2018. The project is currently ahead of schedule and under budget.
