Take a little more transit and eat a little less meat — two things you can do to reduce your environmental impact. In this installment of Meatless Mondays with Metro we visit Organix, a small neighborhood market in Eagle Rock with a 100% vegan deli.
Organix is the place to go if you’re looking for a wide variety of vegan/vegetarian specialty items, i.e. jackfruit meat substitutes and cashew cheese. Some of the items they carry can be found at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, but if you’re big on supporting local businesses give Organix a try — the owner is an Eagle Rock native. They also have a small marketplace that carries fresh, seasonal produce.
The hidden gem is the vegan deli that makes everything ready to order. On my visit I tried the Poncho burrito, their take on the classic carne asada burrito. The burrito base is made with marinated mushrooms and quinoa, and while the texture was definitely not meat-like, the flavors were spot-on. It’s also super hefty, which is good if you’re really hungry, looking to share or want to have leftovers for later. I’d say my burrito was even heavier than an average Chipotle burrito — and better wrapped, too.
Seating at the store is extremely limited — it’s more of a to-go type of place. The deli menu also features a whole host of sandwiches, tacos and burgers, and I’m definitely looking forward to trying more items. Also, on the day I visited, I ran into a couple who were in town from San Diego and made it a point to stop by Organix for their deli. So if you don’t trust my word on whether the food is good, I’ve got a second opinion who can testify. 🙂
Bonus: If after all the healthy eating at Organix you start craving something less healthy for dessert, Colorado Donuts is less than a five minute walk away (and they also have vegan cake donuts).
To get to Organix, take DASH Highland Park/Eagle Rock, Metro Bus 81, 83, or 180/181 to Colorado/Mt Royal.
