This Crenshaw/LAX Line train may not be ready yet for passengers — but it’s still a nice sign of progress. The train is carrying soil excavated by Harriet the tunnel boring machine (TBM) from the first of two rail tunnels to be dug under Crenshaw Boulevard between Leimert Park and Exposition Boulevard.
Harriet is currently headed southbound under Crenshaw. Earlier this week she broke through into the future Martin Luther King, Jr. Station (pics and video here) and will continue south toward the future Leimert Park Station, which the TBM is scheduled to reach in early fall.
The Crenshaw/LAX Line is targeted for completion in 2019. The project is largely funded by Measure R, the sales tax increase approved by L.A. County voters in 2008. Here’s a map of the project:

Love seeing the actual work being done under Crenshaw! Would be great if there was a constant map of where Harriet was. And also list the speed that she is traveling. When do you expect her to be at Hyde Park Blvd and Crenshaw?
Thanks for keeping us up-to-date Steve 🙂
Are those tracks permanent, or just for the ‘dirt train’?
Not permanent — for excavation only at this time.

When are they going to build that damn APM to the LAX terminals?
Hi Me;
Los Angeles World Airports has said that they’re aiming to have it done by 2023. The environmental studies required by law are being done now. It’s a tight time-frame although I think it’s doable.
