Median removal near Wilshire/La Brea to require intermittent lane closures

Due to Purple Line Extension construction, there will be intermittent lane closures along Wilshire Boulevard now through Friday, Oct. 23.

In addition, two stops along the Metro Bus 20 and Metro Rapid 720 route will be relocated in the area.

Here’s the news release from Metro:

The Metro Purple Line Extension contractor plans to remove three street medians along Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles starting Monday, October 12 through Friday October 23, work that will require intermittent lane closures during weekdays only.

Wilshire Boulevard medians will be removed from Cloverdale Avenue to Sycamore Avenue between weekday hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work will occur during the day and will involve saw cutting, demolition, paving and re-striping activities.  Prep work begins on Thursday, with median removal planned on Friday.

This work will require the following intermittent lane closures:

  • Eastbound Wilshire Boulevard reduced to two lanes between Cochran and Sycamore
  • Eastbound Wilshire Boulevard left-turn pocket closed at La Brea
  • Eastbound Wilshire Boulevard left-turn pocket closed at Detroit
  • Westbound Wilshire Boulevard left-turn pocket closed at La Brea
  • Westbound Wilshire Boulevard reduced to two lanes between Orange and Cloverdale
  • Westbound Wilshire Boulevard left-turn pocket closed at Cloverdale

All work has received necessary permits and approvals.  Access for pedestrians will be maintained outside of the construction zone.  Access for emergency responders will be maintained.  Construction may result in changes to bus stop locations. Metro will post signs at affected stops to notify bus passengers about alternative boarding locations. Real-time information will be made available at metro.net/service/advisoriesor by calling 323.GOMETRO.

Medians and landscaping will be returned following construction of the project.

Street median removal is being conducted in advance of the planned reconfiguration of a portion of Wilshire Boulevard on October 23-26 which will enable the contractor to begin building the future Wilshire/La Brea subway station. Soldier pile installation work, the first major station construction activity for the project, is planned in the November timeframe and will be announced at a later date.

The Purple Line Extension will extend L.A.’s subway westward from its terminus at Wilshire/Western approximately nine miles and add seven new stations. The first 4-mile section is now under construction and will be operational in 2023.  It will provide a high-capacity, high-speed, dependable alternative for Angelinos traveling to and from LA’s “second downtown,” including destinations such as Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood.
