Metro employees hold Juneteenth opening ceremony

Metro Board Member Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker and Metro Interim Deputy CEO Stephanie Wiggins today joined members of Metro’s African American Employee Association (AAEA) in a ceremony outside of Metro headquarters to kick off a month of celebration leading up to the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth on June 19.

The holiday is the oldest known celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the United States. This afternoon’s event featured the Color Guard from the 9th and 10th (Horse) Calvary Association, representing the two original segregated all-African American units in the U.S. Army known as the Buffalo Soldiers regiments, as well as a display with historic items from the regiments.
