Good story by the L.A. Times today on Metro potentially adding a Red/Purple Line station in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District. The Metro staff report is above.
In short: the Division 20 rail yards that serve the subway will need to be expanded as part of the Purple Line Extension project to accommodate more rail vehicles and quicker turnaround times for trains (Union Station is currently the end of the line). As part of those improvements, Metro is looking at adding a street-level subway station in the vicinity of 6th Street and Santa Fe Avenue.
More study is needed and funding — as is often the case — would need to be secured. Still, an interesting idea given the growth in the Arts District in the past few years; the Regional Connector’s Little Tokyo Station will be at 1st/Central on the northwest boundary to the Arts District but still a pretty long walk from the Art District’s core.
