Metro gets the Super Mario treatment

Metro has gone 16-bit! That might be a step backward when it comes to technology, but not when it comes to nostalgia. Over the weekend, Chicago artist Robert Bacon posted his re-creation of the Metro Rail map using the same design components of the maps in the classic Super Nintendo video game, Super Mario World.

For full enjoyment of the map, start playing the video below, or if you really want to get into the Mario spirit, listen to it on your earbuds while on the bus or train and use your imagination. Just remember, Yoshi isn’t allowed on Metro trains or buses unless he’s a service Yoshi (he’s been known to run off when frightened).

Bacon has done similar Nintendo-themed maps for Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Tokyo. Though the maps were not officially commissioned by any of the transit agencies (including Metro), they’re undeniably cool and are available as posters on Bacon’s website.
