We are collecting nominations for the Year-Round Golden Pedal Awards, Metro’s competition for great stories about bicycling. We’re featuring these stories in a monthly Why You Ride series – because for many Angelenos, Bike Week never ends!
John Jones III has served as President and CEO of the East Side Riders Bike Club for more than six years. However, his work around the Watts community goes back much longer than that.
It was hard to resist featuring John Jones III as the first winner for this year’s Golden Pedal Awards. Jones was very surprised when he found out that he was being honored due to his extensive service to building communities around Los Angeles County through active living and cultural exchange.
Jones’ connection to Watts and its surrounding communities started when he began working for the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). He has also worked as a field deputy for the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust and Los Angeles Councilman Joe Buscaino.
“It is through my work with ESRBC that I was able to grow and learn how to channel my passion and desire for cycling to see the community be a safer, healthier, and all around better place,” Jones said.
Some of the events Jones and his club have organized include Ride 4 Love, Tour De Watts and CicLAvia, in addition to ESRBC Thanksgiving and Christmas givebacks.
Jones is known for seeing everyone in the community as his family and he is devoted to reaching out and demonstrating that everyone can make things better by working together.
Thank you, John Jones III, for working towards strengthening communities around Los Angeles through active living and cultural exchange! With help from our generous Bike Week sponsors, he will receive a Bike Week LA bag with a Nathan safety vest, Cliff Bars, Patch Kits, Bike Maps, and Every Lane is Bike Lane bumper stickers to share with his community.
