Meanwhile, at the other end of the I-405…

Bridge Demolition Mapwcc_big

There’s an upcoming closure taking place on the I-405, but not where you think. Orange County Transportation Authority recently opened the newly reconstructed connector between the southbound San Diego Freeway (I-405) and the eastbound Garden Grove Freeway (SR-22), marking a milestone for the West County Connectors project. Now crews will move forward to demolish the old structure, a major demolition activity that will require a full 20-hour closure of the I-405 freeway.

Crews will close portions of the eastbound SR-22, northbound I-405 and southbound I-405 freeways from approximately 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 to approximately 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug.18, 2013.

OCTA and the construction team developed an interactive Google map and list of recommended detours for these closures.

Northbound 405 Freeway motorists are advised to take the following detours:

  • Exit Beach Boulevard and turn right; take the westbound 22 on-ramp to reconnect with northbound 405
  • Exit Westminster Avenue (east) and turn left, turn right on Bolsa Chica Road and take the westbound 22 on-ramp to reconnect with the northbound 405
  • -Exit Valley View Street and turn left on Garden Grove Boulevard, turn right on Valley View Street and take the westbound 22 on-ramp to reconnect with northbound 405.

Southbound 405 Freeway motorists have the following detours:

  • Exit Studebaker Road and turn right, turn left on East Second Street/Westminster Avenue, continue on Westminster Avenue to access southbound 405
  • Merge onto northbound 605, exit Katella Avenue and turn right, turn right on Valley View Street to access southbound 405.

Southbound motorists on the 605 should use the following detour:

  • Exit Willow Street and turn right, turn left on Studebaker Road, turn left on east Second Street/Westminster Avenue, continue on Westminster Avenue to access southbound 405.

Motorists on Seventh Street and eastbound 22 should merge on northbound 605, exit Katella Avenue and turn right on Valley View Street to access southbound 405.

  1. My suggestion is to stay away from the area. I think it was last weekend or the week before that some work in the area was being done and the 91 and 105 fwys were stop and go from the 710 into the OC along with the 405 and 605 due to the little work they were doing that weekend. This closer will be trouble. Try the 10, 60 and 210 to the 57 to get into the OC.

Don’t forget, there are a good many Source readers who live or travel through the southeast county who are VERY acutely aware with the 405/605/22 project. Even though it hardly gets any press at all (compared to the other 405 project, in the west side), it is extremely disruptive and has had a huge impact on many people’s commutes for at least two years now.

The sooner they get this done, the better.

  3. Hmm. For me, no different from the late-night freeway closures I’ve been forced to deal with for MONTHS.

I’ve found a better detour than the one CalTrans is recommending, but I’m not saying what it is, or it won’t stay “better” for very long!
