The only time I ever see 3-car Gold Line trains is on New Years, during CicLaVia, and the occasional large event at the Rose Bowl.
Wait, isn’t part of the $40 Fastrak amount a deposit? I don’t remember the exact amount (something like $25 for the transponder deposit and $15 for the tolls or the reverse), but that was definitely what was printed/published. When you return the transponder (e.g. if you move out of the area), you’re supposed to be able to recoup that deposit cost. And you’re supposed to get back whatever toll credit you have left (if any; or if you’ve always carpooled, theoretically you should get the entire amount back).
The deposit has been waived for now.
