For those of you not going out of town, take advantage of the long weekend and check out some of the great events happening around the city.
The legendary queen of Egypt has just settled in at the California Science Center. Cleopatra: The Exhibition features the largest collection of Cleopatra-era artifacts ever assembled in the U.S. The displays give a first-hand account of the famous queen’s world. After visiting Cleopatra, spend the rest of the day exploring the Science Center’s fun, interactive science exhibits. Tickets for Cleopatra are $19.75 for adults, and it’s $26 to visit the exhibition and catch an IMAX film. Go Metro and save $3 on exhibition-only tickets and $5 on combination tickets. On Saturday, join the fight for health and wellness awareness, education, and unification as City Lites hosts its Inner City Sports Festival and Health Fair. There will be vendors, free health screenings, live cultural entertainment and a kids’ fun zone. Register for the free 23k Bike Tour at 7 a.m. at Jesse Owens Park. Registration for the free 5k Bike Tour, Skateboard Journey, and Wheelchair Roll start at 8 a.m. at Earvin Magic Johnson Park. Festival events last from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Jesse Owens Park and is open to the public. Go Metro and claim a free gift at the City Lites booth while supplies last! This weekend you can also party in the streets at the Silver Lake Jubilee! The event features bands, comedians and performers, food trucks and craft vendors. The Jubilee encourages a lifelong engagement with the arts to all its visitors. Go celebrate and support the local community. The Jubilee opens on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets start at $20, buy them online or at the gate. Go Metro and save $6 on weekend tickets or $3 on one-day passes. The community block party portion of the Jubilee is free to attend. L.A. En Vivo Block Party takes over L.A. LIVE for a three-day Latin music and culture festival starting on Saturday at 3 p.m. The block party is free and features vendors, food, live music and cultural performances. Tickets are required for the concerts at Nokia Theatre and the after party at Club Nokia. (Metro Blue or Expo Line to Pico Station, Metro Bus 81 to Figueroa/11th.)
