The 12th annual “Dia de Los Muertos” will be held at Hollywood Forever, Los Angeles’s oldest memorial park, on October 22, 2011, from noon until midnight. The event promises “various sacred ceremonial tributes” as well as performances by Astrid Hadad and Ruben Albarran.
The event charges $10 per person. Tickets can be purchased here.
Avoid parking hassles by taking the 4 or 704 bus on Santa Monica Boulevard that stops at Gower Street, just west of the entrance to the cemetery. The 4 and 704 also stop at the Vermont station on the Red Line — take a westbound bus to the cemetery.
On Saturday, October 22, L.A.’s largest annual history event will take place at USC’s Doheny Memorial Library. “The LA as Subject” 6th Annual Archives Bazaar is free and open to the public — it’s an amazing day that routinely draws thousands of history buffs, educators, students, documentary filmmakers, “LA nerds,” and more.
This year’s event is the largest Archives Bazaar ever, with 81 local archives, museums, libraries and other historical and cultural organizations exhibiting their collections. Special Guest Speaker Christopher Hawthorne (Los Angeles Times) will share the programming calendar with several exciting educational sessions, documentary film screenings and panel discussions, including “Researching L.A. 101,” “West Coast/West Wing: The Nixon And Reagan Presidential Libraries,” and “41st & Central: The Untold Story Of The L.A. Black Panthers”
Here’s more info about the event, and here’s a recent post at the Metro Library’s Primary Resources blog. Bus service from downtown L.A. to USC is available via the Silver Line, 81, 740 and 745, among others.
