A male pedestrian was struck and killed by a northbound Blue Line train at about 7:39 p.m. Thursday night in downtown Los Angeles. The incident occured on Flower Street, south of Venice Boulevard.

The incident is being investigated; the victim was described as a male in his 40s. The Associated Press quoted Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey as saying the man either fell or jumped in front of the train.

It was the 100th death of a pedestrian or motorist on the Blue Line since it opened in July 1990. Of the first 99 fatalties, 26 were motorists, 51 were pedestrians and 22 were ruled suicides by the Los Angeles County Coroner.

As we wrote in a four-part series on safety and the Blue Line in March, the number of motorist deaths has fallen in the past decade. But the number of pedestrian deaths has not fallen in the past decade and suicides have risen. And the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which patrols the line, continues to encounter unsafe activity by both motorists and pedestrians along the line — often flagrantly violating laws, posted safety warnings and traffic signals.
