If you’re ringing in the New Year in downtown LA on the 31st, swing by Angels Flight for a one-cent ride. The view from the top is lovely, and it offers plenty of fun photo opportunities while dressed in your New Year’s best.

Angels Flight is located next to the 4th Street exit of Red/Purple Line Pershing Square Station.

Ride along with Metro Motion: Winter edition takes in Hollywood, ExpressLanes, and future L.A.

 In this latest edition of Metro Motion, transit expansion is transforming the car capital of the world.

Ride along on the brand new Metro ExpressLanes on the 110 Harbor Freeway and check out the digs at the new El Monte Station. Next, take the Metro Red Line to old Hollywood for blast from Tinsel Town’s past. Then “Go Metro” for a glimpse of the walkable, bikeable and sustainable communities of future L.A.

Relax. There’s lessons to be learned from the Great California Shakeout, including why Metro Rail is one of the safest places to be during an earthquake. It’s all there in the winter edition of Metro Motion.

This morning, Rose Queen Vanessa Natalie Manjarrez and Rose Princesses Kate Alice Benuska, Tracy Italia Cresta, Victoria Sophia McGregor, Nicole Cherie Nelam, Sonia Marie Shenoi and Madison Michelle Barili Teodo took a ride on the Expo Line to promote Metro services to the 2013 Tournament of Roses events.

Metro is the best way to get to Pasadena for the Tournament of Roses parade, the Rose Bowl game and post-parade float-viewing at Victory Park. Metro will be running 24 hours on New Year’s Eve for people heading to New Year’s festivities, and the rides between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. will be free.

Metro Deputy Chief Operations Officer Debra Johnson reminded everyone to stay safe and emphasized a few key points:

  • don’t walk on or near the train tracks
  • look carefully for trains coming from both directions
  • always wait for rail crossing gates to close and reopen before crossing an intersection
  • do not bring any flammable liquids, barbeques, fold-out chairs, ladders, large ice chests or coolers onboard trains

The rides are on Metro this Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve

In keeping with tradition, Metro will once more be offering free rides this Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve to provide safe transportation and reduce holiday traffic congestion. No fare will be charged on all Metro Rail and Bus lines starting at 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24 until 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25 and 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31 until 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1.

Buses and trains are running on their usual weekday schedule on today, Christmas Eve. Buses and trains will run on their Sunday/holiday schedules on Tuesday. Here are all of Metro’s schedules and route maps.

Metro Rail will operate all-night service on New Year’s Eve for those staying out extra late and to encourage easy travel to the Rose Parade inPasadena. However, free fares only apply until 2 a.m. Those traveling after 2 a.m. will need to TAP to ride.

Metro Rail and Metro Bus systems will operate on a Sunday schedule Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, both of which fall on a Tuesday this year.

Tonight: L.A. County Holiday Celebration

 

Take your whole family to the L.A. County Holiday Celebration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion tonight. The free three-hour extravaganza lasts from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature over 20 choirs, music ensembles and dance companies from all over Los Angeles. Pre-show activities will start at noon.

Limited service offered on Christmas Day, modified schedule offered on New Year’s Day

LOS ANGELES - Metrolink will operate a Sunday schedule on the San Bernardino and Antelope Valley lines on Christmas Day, Tuesday, Dec. 25.

Metrolink will operate a modified schedule on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1, which will allow people to attend the 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade® celebrations in Pasadena.

The 124th Rose Parade®, themed “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!,” will feature floral floats, equestrian units and marching bands.

To serve the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, the first train on Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line will operate a modified Sunday schedule, departing Riverside-Downtown at 5:30 a.m. and San Bernardino at 6:05 a.m. making all station stops. Train 349 will arrive at L.A. Union Station at 7:35 a.m.

From L.A. Union Station, passengers can transfer without additional charge to the Metro Gold Line and get off at the Del Mar, Memorial Park, Lake or Allen stations. The parade route is just a short walk from the stations.

Metrolink passengers going to the 99th Rose Bowl Game® between Wisconsin and Stanford can take the Gold Line from L.A. Union Station, stopping at the Memorial Park Station in Pasadena. Free shuttles to the stadium will be available.

Oh, the places you’ll go…with Metro (and Metrolink)

Avoid paying for parking and crazy traffic by going Metro to the Tournament of Roses or the Rose Bowl game on New Year’s Day. The Metro Gold Line has four station stops near the parade route in Pasadena. Free shuttles to the Rose Bowl leave from the Parsons parking lot located just three blocks from the Gold Line Memorial Park Station. 

Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line will provide additional service to help people get to Union Station, where they can connect to the Gold Line.

This Saturday and Sunday is East L.A. on Ice, taking place from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. both days at the EastL.A.CivicCenter. The free event features live music, snow, artwalk boutiques, free ice skating for kids and more. The tree lighting ceremony takes place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. (Metro Gold Line to East L.A. Civic Center Station)

Take advantage of Metro’s Destination Discounts to see Disney on Ice at the Staples Center this weekend. Shows are at 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and at 11:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
